Guyana and USA Relations
Exxon Mobil
ExxonMobil is the largest publicly traded international oil and Gas Company. They are one of the world’s largest integrated refiners, marketers of petroleum products and chemical manufacturers.
In May 2015, ExxonMobil announced that they had a significant oil discovery offshore of Guyana. The oil discovery was on the Stabroek Block which has a well names the Liza-1, that was drilled by ExxonMobil affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd. Their well had encountered “more than 295 feet of high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs” (ExxonMobil, 2015).
In regards to the controversy over whom has the rights, the president of Guyana David Granger has assured Exxon that it has nothing to fear. The company has the backing of the Guyana government and international law as it continues to explore. Exxon is slowly gearing up for its next well, which is going to be near the first one, in order to determine how wide and deep the reservoir is.
